I have used this new version of Family Tree Maker for several months now and have found it to be more user friendly than the earlier versions. There is one let down, with the older versions of FTM you were able to search the Internet for matching persons giving you access to fellow researchers web-sites and messages boards and also information on what data CD’s your matching information can be found on. This doesn’t happen with the 2005 version, the only web matches it makes now is with Ancestry.Com which is a subscription site.
Nevertheless the actual programme is very good allowing you an automatic upgrade.

The Family Tree Maker is:
a) over priced
b) poor quality
c) obviously has lots of glitches re their FAQs
d) support is poor and slow. Two responses in 10 days is not next business day response, which is what they promise. The first response told me to look at their FAQs when it was apparent that my query did not fit any of their FAQs
e) advertising is misleading the CDs are not relevant to most of the UK
f) They advertise a FREE book. You need the book to understand the package.
I could go through the alphabet detailing all of my disappointments

Bought for my dad, who has recently become interested i his family history, this program is both easy to use and does everything that he coul want it to do.
It is only needed for reasonably simple things at the moment, but it is clear that there is the scope withing the program for increasingly more advanced works.
The tutorials also offer a simple guide for beginners just beggining their journey of discovery.
A very useful piece of kit for any budding geniologist.

I have been quite happy with this product up until now. Sorting children by date should have been implemented automatically, but requires an extra step that is easily missed. It is a little non-intuitive in places, particularly when getting started. For example, it is not immediately obvious where your data is stored (unless you go looking for it or do a backup) or how to add unrelated individuals.
You have to run this software as administrator, which is poor design, from a security point of view, and a fiddle to set up for limited users.
Unlocking all features of my limited version (after paying for the upgrade) took me several tries, due to non-intuitive behaviour and multiple logins having been created somewhere along the line. There seems no way to get rid of these. Had I not saved this information I would never have been able to restore the software when moving to a new machine.
Where it all went wrong for me was with the export to PDF “feature”, which simply will not work. It caused the software to hang so that the process had to be terminated manually. As this was the primary thing I was paying for in my upgrade, I was not pleased. I went through a long series of emails with support, who were slow, but steady. However, there was no resolution for the problem. I am stuck with software that will not produce PDF reports, or even print to a third party PDF creator.
The final word support had on this is as follows, and I quote:
“I am saying that someting on your computer is causing it to not work. I do not know what that is and have exhaused all avenues we have to try to determine what it is. It is rare, but there are situations where this happens.”
My suggestion that I should try a clean uninstall and reinstall, or to upgrade or restore or update drivers has been rejected by saying “if you are not satisfied, reopen the query”
In other words, too bad mate, your software doesn’t work. Please bear this in mind if purchasing from these people.

I purchased FT Maker Dlxe recently after much consideration. I’ve been lookign for a program for ages to help research my family tree and didn’t know what to buy – there are a few around and you can be overwhelmed by all the different jargon and feature lists
I decided on this one after reading a comparison article in ‘Your Family Tree’ mag. FT Maker was voted the winner from 10 other products and I have to say it has lived up to expectations.
Since using the product I’ve entered some basic info (stuff about close family) and managed to create some charts and trees. I really need to do a bit more research before I can fully use it, but as someone who is relatively new to the hobby, I’m hooked! I’d definitely recommend it.
